8 tips and techniques to create illustrations

Are you interested in creating illustrations that can visually communicate ideas, stories, and emotions?

No matter what you are creating an illustration for - be it a book, website, or marketing campaign - there are several steps you can take to ensure that your illustrations share your stories in unique ways.

In 2021, I created digital illustrations of The Neighborhood's Jesse Rutherford for Insight Magazine, the University of Nevada, Reno's student-run features publication (see image above). I designed these illustrations by first identifying my style, understanding my audience, and planning my composition - all of which helped to depict my story.

Looking for some tips and techniques for creating illustrations that capture the imagination and communicate your messages? Check out these eight helpful pointers below!

1. Identify your illustrative style

Before you start creating illustrations, it’s important to define your style. For example, is your style realistic, minimalistic, or geometric? Your style should reflect your personality, preferences, and the story you want to communicate. Take some time to explore different mediums and experiment with multiple techniques. There are multiple illustration styles out there, so find a design style that resonates with you!

2. Understand your audience

Who are you creating illustrations for? What do they like? What are their interests and preferences? This information can help you tailor your illustrations to your audience, making them more engaging and appealing.

3. Plan your composition

Composition is key to creating imaginative illustrations. Plan your composition carefully, considering the placement of your subjects, the use of negative space, and the flow of your illustration - the principles and elements of design can be super helpful here to create a balanced and visually pleasing composition!

4. Pick your colors

Colors are a powerful tool in illustration. Choose colors that complement your style and your message. Consider the mood you want to convey, the emotions you want to evoke, and the tone you want to set. Look to color theory for inspiration!

5. Sketch your ideas

Sketching allows you to experiment with different ideas, explore compositions, and refine your concept. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or try new things - this is how you’ll find your unique style and voice through consistent practice.

6. Refine your drafts

Once you’ve sketched out your ideas, it’s time to refine your concept. Use your sketches as a guide to creating more detailed illustrations. Additionally, look back at past illustrations and practice redrawing them!

7. Use the right tools

Consider the medium you’re working with - whether it’s digital or traditional - and choose the tools that are best suited to your style and your message. Play with various materials – pencils, pens, markers, chalk, paint, or other mediums – to see what works for you!

8. Get feedback

Share your illustrations with others - maybe it’s a friend, a colleague, or even an online community. Listen to their feedback, consider their suggestions, and use their insights to improve your work.
