Art-Design-Storytelling

Let’s face it, communicating complex ideas and emotions can be CHALLENGING! So how do creative designers tell stories successfully? The answer: through art and design.

Scratching your head as to where to begin? Here are some ways to share your stories in visually captivating ways:

1. Use symbolism

Incorporating symbolic imagery can add layers of meaning, enhance your message, and create a deeper emotional impact on your audience. For example, using a red rose to represent love or a dove to represent peace.

2. Create a narrative sequence

Arranging your art in a specific order can create a narrative sequence, allowing the viewer to follow a story from its beginning to end. This can be done through a series of images, a comic strip, or simply even a storyboard.

3. Use color to convey emotions

Colors have strong emotional associations and using them strategically in your designs can enhance the emotional impact of your story. Use color theory! For example, apply cool colors like blue and green to convey sadness or tranquility, or warm colors like red and orange to convey passion or energy.

4. Use typography to convey tone

The way you use typography can also contribute to storytelling. Choosing different fonts and sizes can convey different tones of voice or emotions.

5. Incorporate texture and pattern

Adding texture and pattern can create visual interest and add depth to your storytelling. For example, using a textured background to create a sense of age or weariness, or incorporating a repeating pattern to create a sense of continuity.

6. Choose the right medium

Different mediums can communicate different moods and emotions. For example, watercolors tend to feel soft and dreamy, whereas acrylic paints can feel bold, bright, vibrant, and energetic.

Key Point: Utilize everything in your artist’s toolkit! Try different techniques and experiment with different combinations of visual elements to create powerful, visually compelling stories.
