Looking to experiment with a new art medium? Consider trying chalk art!
Chalk art is a form of temporary art that involves creating designs on a flat surface, such as pavement or a chalkboard, using colored chalk. Chalk art can range from simple drawings to highly detailed and complex works. The cool part about chalk art is that it can be created by artists of all skill levels!
Blending chalk pastels can be a fun and creative process; however, it can also be a bit challenging. But fear not!
Here are some tips to help you start blending chalk pastels successfully:
1. Use good quality chalk pastels
Quality chalk pastels have a higher concentration of pigment, making it easier to blend colors together. If possible, avoid using cheap pastels as they tend to be harder and less pigmented, making them difficult to blend. There are many brands of chalk to choose from, but I am a big fan of Sargent chalk pastels!
2. Start with a light touch
Begin by applying a light layer to your work surface. Essentially, don’t press down too hard. This will allow you to build up the intensity of the color gradually, making it easier to blend.
3. Layer colors
Layer, layer, layer! Apply different colors on top of each other, starting with the lighter colors first. This will create a layered effect that makes it easier to blend colors together.
4. Use a blending tool
You can use your fingers or a blending tool such as a sponge or a soft bristle brush to blend colors together seamlessly. Again, use a light touch and work in a circular motion to blend your colors smoothly.
5. Experiment with different techniques
Try using different techniques such as cross-hatching, stippling, or scumbling to create different textures and effects. Also, try different tools to blend your chalk on your work surface.
