Chalk Art: Part 6 - Embracing creativity and connection

Art has a unique way of bringing people together - it is a universal language that speaks to the soul.

Recently, I participated in the 2023 Reno Chalk Art & Music Festival, an annual event that transforms the parking lot of the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa into a colorful canvas. Artists from all walks of life come together to create stunning chalk masterpieces directly on the pavement!

This year, I chalked “Colorful Coyote,” a 9-by-12-foot piece celebrating the beauty of the Southwestern desert. Growing up in both Tucson, Arizona, and Reno, Nevada, I wanted to showcase some of my favorite desert dwellers in a wide array of breathtaking colors. It was an absolute blast chalking up this design!

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a chalk artist at this festival was interacting directly with the Reno community. It was so cool talking with spectators who were absolutely amazed by the chalk art transformation over the course of the weekend. It meant a lot to hear that “Colorful Coyote” spoke to their souls and made them feel good.

In addition to speaking with attendees, the festival was a great opportunity to connect with fellow chalk artists. It was incredibly inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented people, each with their unique styles and techniques. Throughout the weekend, I learned so much and was able to exchange my own tips, tricks, and experiences.

If you're an artist, whether amateur or professional, looking for exposure and a chance to connect with a vibrant artistic community, the Reno Chalk Art & Music Festival is an event you should definitely mark on your calendar for next year. It's a celebration of art, community, and creativity you do not want to miss!
