How to overcome creative blocks

Have you ever felt unmotivated to create? Have you been searching for inspiration to no avail?

Creative blocks happen to the best of us, so do not worry – you are not alone!

It is totally natural to fall into a creative rut – sometimes we are just mentally or physically exhausted and need time to recharge.

That being said, every so often we just need a little push in the right direction to get our creative juices flowing again.

How can you overcome creative blocks?

Create every single day

I am sure you may be thinking, “How can I possibly create something each day when I don’t feel inspired?” Valid argument, yet if you schedule even 15 minutes each day to create something – anything – you will be developing a habit and habits are hard to break. So, get out your supplies and start scribbling, designing, writing – ANYTHING.

One way to encourage creativity is to compete in an art or design challenge – a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone! There are numerous challenges to try like the #100DayProject, Inktober, and Daily Logo Challenge. Find a challenge that sounds appealing to you!

Need more inspiration? Search for idea generators that provide you with random prompts. For example, this Drawing Prompt Generator produces ideas and scenarios for you to recreate. You may even find yourself creating something you never would have previously explored!

I suggest building a list of challenges, prompts, and ideas for you to refer back to whenever you find yourself in a creative rut.

Try something new to get out of your head

If you feel uninspired, it may be a sign to break from the norm and try something new, perhaps even unrelated to your craft. Maybe experiment with an art medium you are unfamiliar with. Or try out some new design software. Possibly venture out completely and pick up a new hobby.

Just do something different to get out of your head. Find something that sounds intriguing and start expanding your horizons and gaining new knowledge – you may be pleasantly surprised!

Change your mindset, make mistakes, and push your creative boundaries!

Prioritize your health and creative space

Sometimes you just need to take a small step backward to help overcome your creative block – instead, focus on prioritizing your health and your space.

First, start by looking at your creative space from a new perspective.

Is your space messy or stressful? Push yourself to clean up your environment or remove distracting items. Is your space uninspiring or boring? Add things that make you happy – perhaps it is inspirational quotes, images, or plants.

Make your space positive and stress-free to help spark creativity!

Additionally, focus on your health. Maybe you are stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or on the brink of burnout. If this is the case, prioritize self-care to help you relax. Take a break and go outside. Breathe in some fresh air and look toward nature for inspiration.

To overcome a creative block, you need to take care of your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health.

Key Point: There are multiple tips and tricks to help you get out of a creative block – remember, there isn’t just one right solution. Put yourself out there, try something new, and create even if you fail! Trust me, it will all be worth it.
