Why does blue make you feel relaxed? Red excited? Or yellow happy?
The short answer – Color Theory.
Color is a powerful visual communication tool rooted in psychology that conveys information, affects our emotions, and even persuades our decisions.
According to research, 90% of consumers say their impulse buys are based on color alone.
While we all perceive and react to colors differently, some of the feelings commonly evoked by basic color groups are seen in the image below:

So, what exactly is color theory?
Color theory is arguably the most important aspect of design. Understanding how colors work together, the impact they can have on mood and emotion, and how they can change the look and feel of your design project is critical in helping you stand out.
Now, reflect back to art classes you may have taken in school.
Simply put, primary colors (i.e., red, yellow, and blue) can be mixed to create secondary colors (i.e., orange, green, and purple). Tertiary colors are created when a primary color mixes with a secondary color.
White can be added to a color to create tints and black can be added to create shades.
Colors that are opposite each other on the wheel are complementary (e.g., red and green). They contrast strongly and can be used to attract the viewer’s attention and build energy.
Colors that are next to each other on the wheel are analogous (e.g., red, red-orange, and orange). They have lower contrast and can be used to create a sense of harmony and continuity.
How should you go about choosing colors for your designs?
Finding the perfect color scheme is easier than you may think. First consider what mood and emotions you want to evoke, then refer to your color wheel and start experimenting!
